Did you know… 85 years ago today, Britain’s fire service changed forever… On 18 August 1941, in the midst of the Second World War, the National Fire Service (NFS) was formed. The devastating air raids of the Blitz had shown just how important it was for fire brigades across the country to work together. Town and City fire brigades and the Auxiliary Fire Service were brought together into one nationally organised service, helping to coordinate personnel, equipment and resources wherever they were needed. Back in December, we also marked 85 years since the Sheffield Blitz, when our city experienced two devastating nights of bombing on 12 and 15 December 1940. Thanks to support from heritagefunduk we were able to revamp and reimagine our Blitz exhibition, telling the story of wartime emergency services and the enormous changes they experienced during the Second World War, including the formation of the National Fire Service just eight months after the Sheffield Blitz. Discover their story here at the National Emergency Services Museum in #Sheffield and explore how Britain’s emergency services adapted to one of the most challenging periods in their history. 🚒 #NationalFireService #SheffieldBlitz #FireServiceHistory #NationalLotteryHeritageFund
