Last week, we welcomed the news that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is investing in museums with £1.5 billion funding for culture over the next five years. This includes a 5% uplift in funding for National Portfolio Organisations like us and further rounds of Museums Transformation Funding, both of which are vital to our operations. Investment like this is critical in ensuring museums up and down the country can provide meaningful, inspiring experiences the people they welcome and work with. We’re hugely grateful to DCMS for this investment in museums, but also to you – our visitors 👏 The support we receive through your donations and the income we make when you choose to shop here has a direct impact on our work creating life-shaping experiences for everyone. Thanks to your generosity, we’re able to safeguard Sheffield’s heritage and showcase the multitude of stories that make the city truly unique, something we were so happy to celebrate with everyone who visited or exhibited at the annual Sheffield Heritage Fair at The Millennium Gallery over the weekend (all 1000 of you)! Vertical Panorama: Oak Tree, 2013 Hannah Downing (born 1985) graphite on paper This drawing has been a popular part of New Horizons for its incredible detail. The artist was inspired by the details and textures of the landscape on her journey to work. The artist describes how she studied nature from each direction, from the moss on the ground below to the branches above. The extreme sense of perspective gives a powerful impression of the tree towering above the viewer. It was produced from a composite image of many photographs, Downing describes how, ‘The act of re-making the image carries with it its own type of looking, another relationship between the image and material across time’. Visit New Horizons: Growing Sheffield’s Art Collection to see highlights of the paintings, works on paper, sculpture and video art that have joined the collection over the last ten years. ✨ Open now until - Sun 23 Jan Millennium Gallery Please donate £5 👏 #sheffieldmuseums #visitsheffield #creativesheffield #letscreate @aceagrams @visitsheffield
