In celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, we’re delighted to announce a free community screening of Sheffield DocFest 2024 title Agent of Happiness - taking place at Sheffield Central Library on 12th August! 👉 A happiness surveyor in the Kingdom of Bhutan grapples with his own contentment in this light-hearted yet fascinating probe into how happiness can be measured. 🔗 This event is free to attend - reserve a spot now: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/film-screening-agent-of-happiness-tickets-1993685180042?aff=oddtdtcreator 📍 Carpenter Room, Sheffield Central Library 🗓 Wednesday 12 Aug, 6–7.30pm 🔞 18+ (no BBFC classification) Employed by the Bhutanese government, Amber Gurung travels across mountainous regions to gather data from citizens to measure the country’s gross national happiness. The 148 questions featured in the survey are straightforward, but they draw out the participants’ personal stories, along with a range of emotions that the survey cannot possibly encapsulate. Arun Bhattarai and Dorottya Zurbó’s film explores larger critical issues raised by this questionnaire and assesses whether it is even possible to define a nation’s happiness, both in the home and as a citizen. They also offer a tender portrait of Amber’s life as a caretaker of his ageing mother, his longing for a romantic partner and his insecurities due to a lack of citizenship. In partnership with Sheffield Libraries, Archives & Information

Celebrating National Saturday Club class of 25 / 26! 🎓 Our National Saturday Club participants, 25 regular attendees, all aged 13-16, celebrated the display of their work at the National Saturday Club Summer Show at Somerset House this weekend! The group created a collaborative artwork based on their research and practice over the past year spent at Sheffield Museums. The final piece is formed of four hanging pieces, which reflect the sky in different states, and which incorporate textures and words from the group’s poems. The focus of this year’s work was the The Guild of St George and the latest exhibition ‘Storm Cloud – The Look of the Sky’ at the Millennium Gallery. The group worked extensively with curator Ashley Gallant, selecting works for the exhibition and deciding how these should be displayed in the gallery. The exhibition is inspired by Ruskin’s lecture ‘The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century,’ from which the group created found poetry and then used these texts as inspiration for their collaborative piece of artwork. “My drawing has improved and my sketching…Saturday Club is amazing.” Alicia “Working on longer projects over multiple weeks helped to develop my persistence and resilience.” Tristan “I really enjoyed the masterclass and doing the big collab project too. Both involved lots of teamwork which I liked. I also loved how we had the opportunity to curate a gallery. That was a really big thing.” Khadija “I’ve developed confidence with talking to people I’m not familiar with.” Hector “This club has encouraged me to study art further – I might do a degree in art and design.” Melody-Grace “It has made me more collaborative. I needed to share and trust people with my work.” Ori “It’s made me realise I can always do art, even if I don’t do it professionally.” Alice Visit Sheffield
