✨New at the Millennium Gallery, we've just unveiled a this brand new sculpture by Sam Sherborne which is a memorial to the 270 Sheffield men estimated to have been killed in the first 10 minutes at the Battle of the Somme, France in 1916. They were volunteers in the Sheffield Pals battalion recruited for the First World War. Sam says 'that is arguably the worst 10 minutes in Sheffield's history and a contender for the worst day. There are lots of reasons I made it but one was to make the tragic event more than a sentence in a history book and to communicate the enormity of it.' There is so much to spot in this sculpture, including the individual figurines - each one has its own personality, the angels, and the figures of despair. You can also spot the seven hills and two rivers of Sheffield 👀 See this memorial at the Millennium Gallery now, alongside other sculptures by Sam that share stories both personal and universal, encapsulated in forged steel. 🔗 Visit our website to plan your visit!

Meet the maker! 👋 "Hi, I’m @stevie davies - contemporary fused glass, a glass artist based in Derbyshire! Working from my studio gallery in Wirksworth, I like to work instinctively with specialist glass, letting the colours and cutting/layering process guide me in the creation of one off works of art and accessories. I really hope that my playful approach inspires other people to make their own glass creations on one of my workshops! I’m really excited to share my extra sparkly pieces with you at Crafted”.
