As you enter the yellow-walled section of the Colour exhibition, you’ll be greeted by a lion! This lion dance costume has now been retired, after many years of bringing luck and good fortune to Sheffield residents at Chinese New Year celebrations. Our clever technicians built an armature to fill out the costume, which is why we’ve been able to display the lion looming down at you from atop a cabinet. This Hokusai print is one of the most popular works in our Colour exhibition, and it's unique to the Sheffield leg of this tour. These artworks are incredibly light sensitive, so a different print will be placed in each gallery to avoid overexposing one work. The flat composition and bold use of colour in Japanese woodblock prints inspired Impressionists like Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas. Their influence shows how global art history is.
