THIS WEEK: 🎫 FANTASIAS & FLIGHTS: THE LARK ASCENDING Ensemble 360 🗓️ Tues 4 March, 8pm 📍 The Stables MK The violin soars melodiously above the rest of the quartet in the gorgeous arrangement of Vaughan Williams’ most popular work The Lark Ascending, which concludes this concert of English music for clarinet and string quartet. 🎫 A CELEBRATION OF CZECH MUSIC Ensemble 360 🗓️ Fri 7 March, 7.30pm 📍 Emmanuel Church, Barnsley Janáček’s beloved Mládí (‘Youth’) was written towards the end of his life as a nostalgic celebration of memories of his youth, drawing on his early writing. 🎫 FAMILY CONCERT: CLOSE-UP: MUSIC FOR CURIOUS YOUNG MINDS Ensemble 360 Elinor Moran 🗓️ Sat 8 March, 11am 📍 Cast A lively family concert, featuring five wind musicians (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn). Together they breathe life into the wondrous world of chamber music. 🎫 CONFLICT: SHOSTAKOVICH STRING QUARTETS Ensemble 360 🗓️ Sat 8 March, 2pm 📍 Upper Chapel, Sheffield Shostakovich’s most famous String Quartet No.8 takes centre stage, performed alongside Quartet No.3. Deeply expressive, raw and emotional, both quartets are rich with evocation and allusion – to Shostakovich’s own work, to the sounds of battle, and with his response in the aftermath of war. 🎫 REVOLUTION: SHOSTAKOVICH STRING QUARTETS Ensemble 360 🗓️ Sat 8 March, 7pm 📍 Upper Chapel, Sheffield Ensemble 360 performs two of Shostakovich’s late string quartets in this, the second concert of Music in the Round’s Shostakovich Weekend. Music of extremes, these quirky quartets are at times exuberant, at others sombre, and often capricious, playful and energetic. 🎫 A CELEBRATION OF CZECH MUSIC Ensemble 360 🗓️ Sat 8 March, 7.15pm 📍 Cast As in Barnsley on 7/3 🎫 SHOSTAKOVICH ROUNDTABLE Ensemble 360 Patrick Zuk 🗓️ Sun 9 March, 3pm 📍 Performance Venues Firth Hall Ensemble 360’s Tim Horton and Gemma Rosefield join Soviet-music specialist Patrick Zuk (Durham University) for an hour of illuminating conversation delving into the life and work of Dimitri Shostakovich. Chaired by Dr Benjamin Tassie, Music in the Round’s Sheffield Programme Manager. 🎫 POWER: SHOSTKOVICH PIANO QUINTET @ensemble360 🗓️ Sun 9 March, 6pm 📍 Performance Venues Firth Hall Music in the Round’s Shostakovich Weekend concludes with a celebration of some of the composer’s best-loved chamber music featuring the piano. The remarkable Piano Trio No.2 opens the concert with an other-worldly melody (played stratospherically high on the cello), giving way to virtuosic and rhythmic folk-tunes. The Piano Quintet follows, combining rustic abandon with moments of tender, lyrical beauty, underlining the range of Shostakovich’s powerfully expressive writing.
