This February we celebrate national LGBT+ History Month, exploring the history of the gay rights movement and its contribution to society. Here are the best pieces of film and theatre this month which celebrate the LGBT+ community, both past and present...

Dykes, Camera, Action! + Afterparty with Anna Kissed

"When director Caroline Berler couldn’t find any films celebrating the icons of lesbian cinema she decided to take matters into her own hands and document a history of queer cinema from the women who made it happen. Featuring filmmakers Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Dunye, Yoruba Richen, Desiree Akhavan, Vicky Du, and film critics B. Ruby Rich and Jenni Olson. This bold documentary follows some of the most influential lesbian filmmakers of the past 50 years, pulling back the curtain to reveal a wealth of talent and history shared by these powerful women." - Showroom Cinema 18 +

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Valentine's Day Preview)

"Set in Brittany in 1760 Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be and Marianne must paint her without her knowledge. She observes her by day and secretly paints her at night. Intimacy and attraction grow between the two women as they share Héloïse’s first and last moments of freedom, all whilst Marianne paints the portrait that will end it all." - Showroom Cinema 15 +

Desert Hearts

"Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first film, Desert Hearts, was ground-breaking when it was released in 1985: a love story about two women, made entirely independently, on a shoestring budget, directed by a woman. Set in the 1950s, Desert Hearts follows strait-laced professor Vivian Bell as she arrives in Nevada to file for divorce. On arrival she winds up catching the eye of someone new, the free-spirited young Cay, setting off a slow seduction that unfolds against a breath-taking desert landscape." - Showroom Cinema 18 +
