We’re celebrating 250 YEARS of Sheffield Assay Office with a special display at Millennium Gallery ✨ The process of assaying and hallmarking dates to the 13th century and it’s one of the earliest forms of consumer protection. Sheffield Assay Office has been operational since 1773 and is one of only four remaining UK Assay Offices 👊 Here are some of the star objects on display, look out for them when you visit! 👀 🟡250th Anniversary Dish, 2023 Commissioned by Sheffield Assay Office, Britannia Silver and laser hallmarked by Colette Bishop (picture 1 and 2). 💮Embrace White Rose, 2023 Commissioned by Sheffield Assay Office, Britannia Silver and laser hallmarked by Shinta Nnakajima (picture 1 and 3). 🥇Earrings and rings, awarded 'Assay Masters Prize for excellence' in June 2023 for Liu Freya's BA collection, Support. Sheffield Assay Office have supported the jewellery and metalwork programme Sheffield Hallam University for 30 years, offering precious metal for students to work with and free assaying and hallmarking. You can also see the second prize winner, Nova Smith's articulated candelabra, both are in the display case in the window.
