Here’s Philip, holding a photo of himself back in the 80s working in Leah's Yard 📸 Philip Drury, third generation silversmith, started as an apprentice in his father’s silversmith business in 1959. Then becoming the owner of NBC F Drury & Sons SIlversmiths and working at the site until it was sold to property developers in 2000. Both men and women worked in the trade, with men silversmithing and women completing the buffering and polishing (photo 3 #sheffieldcitycouncil).
In the second photo you can see the front of #LeahsYard from Cambridge Street, with E & G Jewellers and The Sportsman pub to the left of Leah’s. Jules used to work at The Cossack pub in the late 90s and it was owned by the same folks who ran The Sportsman, so after shifts, she’d end up there! Sad to see the pub go, but at least Hop Hideout is keeping some beer history going nearby. How interwoven the decades of life, people and places can end up being!?! Though that also means, on and off, Jules has worked 28 years in social clubs, pubs, bars, nightclubs, and her own #beershop 🍺 Where does the time go….?
What a pleasure to spend time with Philip and those on the @heritageopendays tour. See the next group Sat 20th Sept.
