About us

The Brown Bear is one of the oldest pubs in the city centre and is a traditional two-roomed pub. It is housed in a Grade II listed building that dates from the late 18th century - predating most of the buildings in the surrounding area (which include the Town Hall). The pub was possibly named after the bear baiting pit that was located in the Botanical Gardens. The bear pit closed in the 1870s. Today it is part of the Samuel Smith brewery.
