From crazy golf to shuffleboard, axe throwing to karaoke, tenpin to duck pin bowling (yes, it's a thing!), here's our guide to a few 'must visit' venues in Sheffied city centre for your next gaming experience.

Roxy Ball Room

With a huge variety of games under one roof, alongside 'massive rock and indie tunes', Roxy Ball Room brings the playground to the bar.

Games available at Roxy Ball Room include crazy pool, ice-free curling and duck pin bowling.

Duck pin bowling features shorter lanes, 'feather-light' balls, and 'squat, duck-shaped pins'. The game moves faster than tenpin and demands 'finesse over force'. Scoring a strike is trickier, so bowlers get three rolls per frame to hit their mark!

The National Videogame Museum

Explore how videogames are made, who makes them, and even why they are made at the National Videogame Museum in Sheffield city centre. 

Play over 100 games, learn their history and cultural importance and even make them at this unique museum experience.

Visit the What's On section of the National Videogame Museum website for information on special events and exhibitions and read the FAQs section for handy information ahead of your visit. 

The National Videogame Museum is open Thursday to Sunday and every day during the Sheffield school holidays.

Tenpin

One of the top destinations for ten pin bowling in the city, Tenpin features 21 modern bowling lanes and a wide range of indoor entertainment for all ages.

Alongside bowling, Tenpin Sheffield also features karaoke, laser tag, escape rooms, and crazy golf, giving you more ways to enjoy your leisure time.

Crack the Code

Pit your wits against Crack the Code's rooms and see if you have what it takes to beat the countdown clock.

Crack the Code features three escape room experiences - Apartment 9A Discovery of Dragons and Shawshank Prison Break.

It’s fun, it’s challenging and the tension builds as you watch the time slipping away.

At Cryptology they have three fantastic escape room experiences on offer - AfterlifeThe Mysterious Case Of Hugh Dunnitt and The Great Henderson's Heist

In The Great Henderson's Heist you're sent by a shady character into a factory known to make one of Sheffield's most coveted and valuable items. Left unsupervised in the factory, can you get the power systems back online so you can access the safe and steal the prize?

Cryptology's experiences are typically for 2-6 people.

Houdini's Escape Room Experience is located within Tenpin on Angel Street, providing a 'thrilling, real-life escape game adventure' inspired by the Japanese online game ‘Takagism.’

Houdini's Escape Room Experience offers 60 minutes of 'thrilling gameplay' that is 'fun, exciting, and memorable - perfect for enjoying with friends, colleagues, or family.'

Their escape rooms are designed to be highly challenging, providing a great sense of achievement while encouraging teamwork and collaboration as you solve puzzles and riddles together.

Escape rooms at Houdini's include Creepy CarnivalEscape from Alcatraz and Escape from RMS Titanic.  

As part of your experience, you'll also receive a free group photo taken after the game to commemorate your adventure!

3. Get stuck into a good board game

Here are a few options when it comes to discovering 'that new board game', whether it's an experience for two right through to a larger group. 


The Dice Box

At one of Sheffield city centre's newest arrivals, The Dice Box, they're bringing people together to 'play board games, build with bricks, enjoy food and drinks, and relax in a welcoming café setting'. 

You do not need to know how to play games before you arrive. The Dice Box team is happy to help you choose something suitable for your group and experience level.

And they also offer an extensive menu of 'casual food, artisan coffee, specialty blended teas, craft beers, cocktails, and thick milkshakes designed for table enjoyment'.

You can even take a virtual tour of Dice Box before you visit!

At The Gamers Guide Cafe on East Parade, they believe that everyone loves board games...they just haven’t found their favourite yet!

Patriot Games

Patriot Games first opened their doors in Sheffield in 1994!

Over the years they have evolved from a market stall in Sheffield's iconic Castle Market to their now extensive Gaming Centre on Mary Street, which has been their home since 2022. 

As well as their significant retail presence, Patriot Games also host an extensive events calendar dedicated to all things gaming and board games.

Did you know the Sheffield Central Library has its own dedicated board game section with a range of games suitable for adults and young people.

Adult members can borrow a game free of charge for up to three weeks!

Waterstones

At Waterstones in Orchard Square the second Thursday of each month is a dedicated board game night!

You can bring your own game or join in with someone else’s and try something new.

Under 18’s are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

4. Entertainment on the big screen

Sheffield city centre is home to three fantastic cinemas. 

Between them, The Light, ODEON Luxe and Showroom Cinema, show everything from the latest releases and big screen blockbusters through to the very best of independent and world cinema.

5. A trip to the theatre

Sheffield city centre is home to Sheffied Theatres, the largest theatre complex outside London. Clustered around Tudor Square, Sheffied Theatres' venues include...

Between them, they showcase the very best of Sheffield Theatres' own curated productions and a series of touring productions covering musicals, plays and drama and festivals.

Crucible Theatre

Originally opened in 1971, the Crucible - as well as being the home of the World Snooker Championship - is a world-famous theatre and iconic Sheffield landmark, with a distinctive stage.

This famous modern theatre is home to world-class productions and ground-breaking theatre, made right here in Sheffield. The epic stage is surrounded by seats on three sides, meaning you’re never more than 20 metres from the action.

A melting pot for stories old and new; be captivated by a classic drama or amongst the first to witness the next big thing. High drama or high kicks, it’s an experience like no other.


Lyceum Theatre

With over a hundred years of history, the beautiful Lyceum provides an ornate backdrop to the very best of the West End and a window on the world.

Variety is the spice of life and they have it all - musicals and drama, comedy and dance, the hot ticket and the family favourite. 


Montgomery Theatre

In January 2025, the Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre joined the Sheffield Theatres family of venues.

A leading arts centre for children, families and community groups in Yorkshire, the Montgomery is also home to many of Sheffield Theatres participatory strands for children and young people.

A Simply Beastly Murder by Rachel E. Thorn

Playhouse

The Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse is an intimate, versatile space for getting even closer to the action.

Previously known as The Studio, this 'miniature marvel' flexes from 100 to 400 seats and welcomes top treats from the fringe, local heroes and new treasures.

Sheffield-made productions are staged here too. Intimate, but never small scale, the space is completely transformed for each show. You’ll never see this magical theatre look the same way twice!

Imagine being born in an oven and the first person you meet wants to dunk you in his tea!

The Gingerbread Man, by Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company, is at the Playhouse in October 2026.
