Chapel Walk

Sheffield’s historic shopping lane reawakening.

Tucked between Fargate and Tudor Square, Chapel Walk has long been one of Sheffield’s most characterful shopping streets — a charming pedestrian lane lined with independents, cafés, boutiques and creative businesses. After several challenging years, Chapel Walk is now experiencing a major resurgence, supported by significant public investment and fresh local enterprise.

A £1.24 million regeneration boost has helped restore the street's vibrancy, with improvements to shopfronts, upper-floor access and the public realm encouraging new businesses and investment.

Through the Fargate Front Door Scheme, funding is being used to revitalise shop fronts, enhance accessibility to upper floors, and support small and new businesses to move into vacant units. New public art, improved lighting and environmental enhancements have made the walkway brighter, more welcoming and more attractive for visitors.

Alongside this, business start-up grants through the ReNew Sheffield programme have helped independent retailers establish themselves on Chapel Walk, contributing to the street's growing mix of businesses.

Chapel Walk’s revival is also being powered by a wave of creative and artisan businesses moving in or expanding — from Juno Books to Element Games, cafés like Staniforths and Feast, and other boutique traders who embody Sheffield’s independent character. A long‑missed iconic blue Chapel Walk sign, originally installed in 1996, is also expected to return after years of absence, helping restore a sense of identity and visibility at the Fargate entrance.

Chapel Walk’s revival is also being strengthened by Gut Level, the queer‑led DIY venue and community space that relocated to the street in May 2024. The venue has become a cultural anchor for the lane, hosting an eclectic programme of club nights, gigs, workshops, communal meals and community groups — playing a significant role in bringing younger, creative audiences back into the area. Gut Level also recently received a boost to secure their future, through a successful campaign and the Music Venue Properties (MVP) ‘Own Our Venue’ initiative - in celebration of this, Fatboy Slim played a surprise DJ set there.

Record shop Memory Dance has now also opened on Chapel Walk, bringing back great memories for Sheffield music fans, and it even houses a small cinema.

Other recent developments include celebrity Ben Fogle opening an office for his clothing brand, Buffalo.

With renewed investment, community support and a commitment to celebrating its heritage, Chapel Walk is stepping confidently into a new chapter — a lively, atmospheric and distinctly Sheffield destination once again connecting shopping, culture and city‑centre life.
