Devonshire Green
The City Centre’s urban park.
Devonshire Green is the largest and most important green space in Sheffield city centre — a designated district park bordered by Devonshire Street, Fitzwilliam Street, Eldon Street and Wellington Street at the heart of the Devonshire Quarter. Covering around 9,000 square metres, it serves as the main open space for residents, students, visitors and the surrounding independent businesses.
Created in 1981 on land cleared after the Sheffield Blitz, the Green transformed a long‑derelict bombsite into a public park dedicated to those who died in the 1940 air raids. A major £1.6 million redesign in 2007 introduced new turf, extensive planting, improved lighting, “sitting walls” and a terraced grass amphitheatre designed specifically to host events and public gatherings.
Since then, Devonshire Green has become one of Sheffield’s hardest‑working event spaces, regularly hosting outdoor festivals, community activities and city‑wide celebrations. It has staged everything from early Tramlines events to outdoor cinema, cultural festivals and city centre fan zones — and remains a key venue for the Tramlines Fringe, drawing large crowds each summer. Its flexible lawn, stepped seating and central location make it a natural focal point for public programming and informal gatherings alike.
The Green is also home to the district’s well‑used floodlit skatepark, in place since the 1990s, adding to its youthful, energetic character.
