🥧 Fresh food and drink

Blend Culinary Foundation, Cambridge Street Collective

Cookery masterclasses fuelled by purpose. That’s the idea behind Sheffield’s new Blend Culinary Foundation.

📸 Cooking class at the Foundation

The Community Interest Company is based inside a community kitchen at Europe’s biggest food hall, the (also new as of May) Cambridge Street Collective on Backfields.

But it has a story all of its own.

The kitchen is hosting a diverse combination of cookery and tasting classes, from Indian cookery with former Masterchef contestant Raheel Mirza to children’s summer cooking workshops.

It’s also available for private and corporate hire, so businesses can host product photoshoots or families can host celebrations there. And the long-term aim is to alleviate food poverty while uniting diverse communities in the city and providing food education.

Niki Baker, community engagement lead for the Blend Family non-profit, said:

“We have pledged to give back one million meals to people in need in Sheffield. We will do that through our purpose-built community kitchen and its packed programme of events and workshops. All of our events will help us give something back to the community either by raising funds or creating meals from surplus produce.

"We can also offer team building with a difference. Business teams can go to the S6 food bank to choose produce before they whip up meals in our kitchen, which are then given back to the food bank to go out to the community.”

Niki Baker, Blend Culinary Foundation

The foundation is Sheffield city centre's only dedicated cookery school.

You can see upcoming events at Blend Culinary Foundation - also including cheese and wine nights with a cookbook club planned - here 👀

Forge Bakehouse, Sheffield Station

Independent bakery Forge is moving to a new, bigger spot in Sheffield railway station this month.

The prime slot at the bottom of the main stairway was chosen due to the bakery’s popularity with railway passengers.

Forge is known for its artisan bread and pastries, and has expanded across Sheffield 👀

T4 Sheffield, Fargate

The demand for bubble tea shows no sign of boiling over.

T4 brings authentic Taiwanese teas with tapioca pearls to Fargate, with the opportunity to customise your drink. Creative options include aloe smoothies 🥤

Get stuck into a city centre food tour 🍽️

The good people at Kelham Island Food Tours have recently expanded their operation and now offer not one, but two differently-themed city centre food tours 👏

The 'History & Brunch Tour' is a three-hour tour of Sheffield city centre which is designed to take you back through time, visiting a number of locations that have played a role in Sheffield's history, finishing - of course - with a delicious sit-down brunch 😋

'A Taste of Sheffield' is a four-hour guided walking food tour of Sheffield city centre incorporating food, drink, local history and culture. It's a fun and insightful afternoon for Sheffield residents and visitors alike! Tours start on Saturday 31 August and will run twice a month.

🍹 Nightlife and hospitality

Gut Level, Chapel Walk

In a major boost for Sheffield’s LGBTQ+ scene, Gut Level DIY music and arts community is now in its new home.

The not-for-profit movement raised an incredible £100,000 in a year-long campaign to transform the former Andrew’s Cafe into an inclusive venue. The aim remains giving a platform to all underrepresented people in the music industry, including women, LGBTQ+ people and marginalised genders.

Now there is an ever-changing programme of events, from crafts and co-working to club nights and a weekly quiz, plus a roof terrace to enjoy.

Frazer Scott, co-founder and director at Gut Level, said:

“People really wanted something like this to exist in Sheffield. That’s why we were able to be successful in our fundraising, because there’s nothing else like it in the city.

“It’s good to be in the city centre, it’s very easy to get to us, but because we are on Chapel Walk it does still feel private. It is still a bit of a secret and we need to be telling people about it!”

Gut Level’s costs are covered by its membership scheme, with prices starting at £2 to attend events or workshops. Become a member of the grassroots space here.

Cosy Club, Holly Street

Popular restaurant and cocktail bar Cosy Club is moving into the heart of town.

Set to open on Monday 15 July, the national venue will offer a statement bar, all-day dining with modern and classic British dishes plus brunch. It will also include a private dining room and terrace, based inside the former Pitcher and Piano.

It will also offer food and drink, at a location yet to be confirmed 🤫

Radisson Blu, Pinstone Street

Sheffield’s stylish flagship hotel is now officially open 👏

Visitors can enjoy the Scandinavian design of the 154 rooms, located one minute’s walk from key attractions.

Residents can also be part of the action, and catch the stunning views over the Peace Gardens.

Sheffield Castle, Castlegate

Archaeologists have discovered parts of Sheffield Castle unseen for centuries as excavations take place for the Castlegate Regeneration Project.

The dig by Wessex Archaeology - the biggest on the site to date - has uncovered the castle’s drawbridge pier, part of the castle’s internal walls and more evidence in the moat.

📸 Wessex Archaeology

Sheffield Council plans to put the castle's remains on public display and create a brand new public space on the site of the old Castle Market.

💡 Get hands on with the Sheffield Castle works with an excavation tour as part of this year's Heritage Open Days in September.

English Touring Opera, TBC

Sheffield’s creative credentials have encouraged English Touring Opera to relocate from London to the north.

The company’s offices will move into a city centre temporary home by October 2024, and find a permanent home here next year.

Langford Tower, off St Mary’s Gate

A new 24-storey development of apartments with striking city centre views has been completed.

The view from Langford Tower

Harmony Works, Canada House

There’s even more good news for Sheffield’s status as a music city.

The ÂŁ14m Harmony Works project to create a new music education hub has taken a massive step forward with the purchase of the Grade II listed Canada House opposite the Ponds Forge tram stop.

Chapel Walk public art commission

Shortly after our January blog on new city centre additions, it was announced that historic Chapel Walk was to receive a ÂŁ250,000 boost.

The money will be spent on public art for the charming alleyway plus illuminated pieces and bespoke gates for lesser known lane Black Swan Walk.

City of the Year

Get ready for some Yorkshire rivalry as Sheffield has been shortlisted for the prestigious City of the Year plaudit.

We’ll be going up against Leeds (boo!) and Salford in the annual real estate awards from EG, which celebrate work to create liveable, successful places. The winner will be announced in October.

And finally…

Charity Project 6, which provides free support for people with issues including alcohol and drugs use, is moving to a new home on Cumberland Street after 40 years on Abbeydale Road. The new building will provide greater accessibility and a cafe space for extra social activities.
