✨ Then and now - 150 years of Sheffield’s art collection! ✨ Here’s two landscapes, from the collection, one new, one old. John Linnell’s The Timber Wagon (1871), which is currently on display in the Graves Gallery, was part of the Mappin bequest in 1887, and a more recent addition to the collection, Blackout 13 (2012) by Dan Holdsworth joined the collection in 2018 and can be seen in New Horizons at the The Millennium Gallery Sheffield’s art collection was established 150 years ago and was founded on generosity. The collection was founding by benefactors, John Newton Mappin and JG Graves with the idea that the people of Sheffield should have access to world-class art, here on their doorstep. And today, Sheffield Museums continues to grow, celebrate, safeguard and share the collection and bring great art to the city to celebrate the artistic excellence that reflects the world we live in and helps us find our place in it. As a charity, that work – staging vibrant, dynamic exhibitions, championing home-grown artists, and celebrate the city’s collection through bold innovative displays – is only possible with your help.
